A little something about Dr. Armstrong

Dr. Taylor Armstrong is committed to providing patient-centered, comprehensive mental health care to competitive athletes across the lifespan. Whether this be through initial assessment or follow-up care, whether the focus is on the impacts of serious mental health conditions or strengthening a mental approach for sport, Dr. Armstrong strives to meet athletes where their goals are.

Following his undergraduate degree at Princeton University, Dr. Armstrong returned home to the University of Toronto where he completed his medical degree and then residency training in general and child and adolescent psychiatry. For fifteen years he worked as staff psychiatrist at The George Hull Centre for Children and Families, providing family-centered mental health care to the diverse communities in Etobicoke. With his expertise in the area of child developmental and trauma, he continues to provide support as consultant to the Centre’s Institute of Childhood Trauma and Attachment.

Since 2020, Dr. Armstrong’s professional focus has shifted to the mental health needs of elite athletes. He completed his certificate for additional training in Sports Psychiatry with the International Society of Sports Psychiatry (ISSP), and now serves as consulting sport psychiatrist to LiveActive Sport Medicine Health and Performance, as well as the David L. MacIntosh Sport Medicine Clinic with the University of Toronto. In these settings he provides comprehensive mental health care to athletes competing anywhere along the spectrum from competitive youth sports to varsity athletics to the Olympic Games. Specific areas of interests include youth athlete development, parenting in sport, neurodevelopmental disorders and sport, trauma care for athletes, and mood and anxiety disorders.

Dr. Armstrong currently holds a faculty appointment with the University of Toronto as assistant professor with the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. For more than 15 years he has contributed to the learning of medical students and residents through direct teaching and supervision, curriculum design, and in various education leadership roles. Dr. Armstrong still calls Etobicoke home, where he lives with his remarkable wife, two talented adolescent children, and far too many pets. He has made his own share of mistakes as a parent and coach for his children along their respective journeys in competitive sports. They continue to serve as his best teachers.
